South Western Moroccan Cooperatives Fairly Traded Argan Oil.
The Properties
Argan oil is principally produced as edible, beauty grades, and cosmetic oil and it is obtained from roasted kernels. Karaaw exclusively uses the 100 % virgin beauty Argan oil, and the cosmetic Argan oil. The virgin oil is pure, golden-colored, and has no taste; whereas the cosmetic oil is only used for the preparation of shampoos, and moisturizers. In Europe, the price of argan oil is approximately 100 Euros per liter and it is also a luxury food[1]. Consequently, illegal practices such as the dilution of the argan oil with cheaper oils have occurred. That is the main reason why Karaaw products are exclusively formulated, tested, and processed by certified laboratories located in Morocco.

The Market
Major companies have had the monopoly of the hair care business for a while making over a 100 million in revenues each year. Traditionally, they were more catering or appealing towards a “specific clientele”, but it is no longer the case. Indeed, taking advantage of the renewed cultural consciousness of the exquisiteness of natural hair from our beautiful black women, they have shifted interest. Corporations have now been making major sales worldwide gathering at least ¾ of the profits from this newly booming industry. Small business owners in the black community are yet still able to at least make a decent return on their investments, but only if they have a good product line. Nevertheless, organic products are extremely hard to come by especially when they are imported from foreign countries; Argan oil is no exception to this.
Anti-sebum Activity
Argan oil-containing creams are frequently indicated in cosmetology as moisturizing anti-aging, and repair creams. Experiments were conducted in order to prove the amazing effects of the oil. Indeed, the anti-sebum activity of topical Argan oil was demonstrated on 20 17- to 50-year-old volunteers. The sebum levels were determined on forehead and both cheeks. A twice daily facial application of an oil-containing cream for four weeks revealed significant anti-sebum activity that translated to reduced greasiness and improved appearance of oily facial skin.[1]

Argan oil is unique, it is obtained from the fruits of the argan tree ( Argania spinosa). It is exceptional because of its multiple pharmacological properties and exceptional savor. It is a relic from the tertiary era and is the only member of the Sapotacease family of plants. This natural resource is mostly located in the Southwestern part of Morocco in the poorest part of the country. It plays a major ecologic and socio-economic role[1], and it is processed by a cooperative of humble women.
